Project Update: Construction of Seaford Wetlands Bridge

Date: 2 October 2023

As a part of Seaford Wetlands Rejuvenation Project, Frankston City Council is constructing a pedestrian and cyclist bridge across Kananook Creek, adjacent to the Melbourne Water pump station at Palm Beach Drive, Patterson Lakes.

Why is Council constructing the bridge?

Council has been engaging with the community on the Seaford Wetlands Rejuvenation Project since February 2022. Community feedback highlights a shared desire to create a loop around the wetlands, involving the construction of a pedestrian and cycling bridge across Kananook Creek and a proposed shared user path on the northern bank of the creek to ‘close the loop’.

The design of the bridge also responds to our community’s feedback, with 68 per cent of respondents preferring the proposed timber cladded bridge.

Who is funding this project?

The construction of the bridge is part of $5 million Seaford Wetlands Rejuvenation Project funded through the Victorian Government’s Suburban Parks Program. In addition to the bridge the project will deliver:

  • A new shared-use path that will link to the new bridge, creating a full pedestrian circuit around the Seaford Wetlands (path to be delivered by City of Kingston)
  • Habitat and ecological improvements
  • Cultural Values Study and self-guided biocultural interpretative trail
  • Upgraded signage and facilities, including a new viewing platform.

When will construction of the new bridge occur?

Works are expected to begin in mid-October 2023 weather permitting and will be due for completion by May 2024, weather permitting. The working hours will be 7:00am to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday.

How will this affect me?

Traffic management will be in place for the duration of these works to ensure the safety of workers, road users, residents and adjacent properties. Access to the properties will be maintained for the duration of these works, however, some delays can be expected.

During the construction period, the existing asphalt path along Kananook creek parallel to Patterson River Secondary College will be closed. The detours will be in place for pedestrians and cyclists.

Please see attached detour plan.

The appointed contractor and Frankston City Council are committed to minimising the impacts on adjacent owners/occupiers and road users, however, there may be some noise and disruptions to adjacent properties.
