FAQ

  • Part 1: Further Information
  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Frankston City

Less than 1% of the greenhouse gases produced in the Frankston municipality come from Council’s operations (things like offices, leisure centres, and Council vehicles). The other 99 % comes from homes, transport, business and industry. We talk about these different sources of greenhouse gas emissions as ‘Council emissions’ and ‘community emissions’ respectively.

The chart below shows the biggest community emissions sources:

    Chart, pie chartDescription automatically generated

tCO2-e = tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent

The Frankston municipality’s community emissions fall into five major categories:

    1. Electricity emissions (45%)
    2. Transport emissions (38%)
    3. Gas emissions (12%)
    4. Refrigerant emissions (e.g. older air conditioning units) (3%)
    5. Waste & water emissions (2%)
  • Part 2: Further Information
  • Taking action on climate change in Frankston City

Climate change means that extreme weather events like heatwaves, floods, storms, and bushfires are all likely to become more severe and more frequent. Longer term changes like droughts, sea-level rise, and increased temperatures are also likely to get worse.

These changes could have serious negative impacts on people, buildings, infrastructure, and our local environment, and on emergency services. It is, therefore, important to take action to reduce vulnerability to climate-related impacts, as well as adapting to a changing climate.

Council has identified several aspects of the Frankston municipality that are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

    These aspects include:

    • People (e.g., people in hard-to-heat/cool homes, people in flood-prone areas)
    • Infrastructure (e.g., roads, stormwater drains, Council-owned buildings)
    • Natural environment (e.g., coastline, wildlife, wetlands)
    • Emergency services (e.g., VIC SES, CFA/FRV, community volunteers)
