Outcomes of Community Engagement:

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Community Engagement. We had 189 responses with the majority of people preferring 'Option 2 - Remove the car parking Construct the Shared User Path on the roadside'. Council will now progress with a planning application for this option.

What is happening?

Council is delivering an extension to the shared user path along Dandenong Rd East. The new section of path will be located between Cricklewood Ave and Fletcher Rd, Frankston, to provide a continuous link into Frankston.

This section of shared user path is also an important link in a much longer cycling network, connecting Melbourne to the Mornington Peninsula, via Frankston.

This project is funded by the Victorian Government as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project.

Why are we engaging on this project again?

Last year we asked for feedback on a plan to build the Shared User Path on the nature strip. We let our community know that doing so would mean trees and vegetation would need to be removed. We received a number of concerns about the proposed tree and vegetation removal, so we want to engage with you further to ensure we can come up with the best possible solution.

Council has developed a second option. Option 2 has minimal impact on trees but will mean a loss of on-street car parking on one side of Dandenong Road East. This is a difficult decision. We know the community values both trees and car parking in the city centre.

We are now asking residents and Dandenong Road East users, to consider the surrounding area and let us know which option best serves the community.

  • Option 1 - Remove the trees

Construct the Shared User Path on the nature strip

Option 1 would remove approximately 28 trees. A planning permit will be required to remove these trees. Another 14 trees will need significant pruning.

Option 1 would mean a loss of approximately 16 on street parking bays from one side of Dandenong Road East.

  • Option 2 - Remove the car parking

Construct the Shared User Path on the roadside

Option 2 would remove approximately 76 on-street parking bays from the west side of Dandenong Road East.

Option 2 would remove approximately 4 trees. A planning permit will be required to remove these trees. Another 13 trees will need significant pruning.
